Burr Coffee Grinder VS. Blade Coffee Grinder (Video)

Before I began this intense, yet very rewarding, journey in the coffee industry, I had only used a blade coffee grinder. It was what I grew up seeing the most. However, now that I am exploring every facet of coffee from bean to brew, I quickly learned that the blade grinder doesn’t actually grind the coffee beans, but does more damage.

After doing some research and testing, I want to introduce you to the ceramic burr coffee grinder mill. They are offered in many styles from wooden, glass, plastic and stainless steel.

I promise you once you experience coffee that was ground using the burr grinder, you will never want to go back to a blade! The difference in the results is like night a day.

They do offer both manual and automatic options, but we’ll start with the manual (portable) version for now.

According to Coffee Detective, blade grinders are less expensive than burr grinders, but they don’t really “grind” your coffee beans. They smash them to bits with two very fast moving blades.

There is one basic problem with the smashing approach.

By repeatedly chopping the beans at high speed, you end up with grinds which are inconsistent in size...from powder to chunks. This isn’t a great way to get the best from your beans, and the powder-sized particles can cause clogging problems both with French Presses and espresso machines.

With the burr grinder, you can set the grind level (from coarse to fine) to suit the brewing method. For example, with the French Press it is recommended to use coarse grounds. For an espresso, you would use fine grounds.

Having a burr grinder allows you to customize the results for various brew methods for the best cup of coffee every single time. Consistency is the key to amazing coffee! You want nothing less than the best. Otherwise, what’s the point?

As a bonus, MONARCH will offer the manual ceramic burr coffee grinder for your convenience!

Enjoy!
